How to choose an extendable or folding dining table
An extendable dining table lets a room work at more than one capacity, while a folding dining table can reduce its footprint between meals. Rit Concept’s current extendable dining tables should be compared product by product because folding, drop-leaf and extending mechanisms behave differently. The right choice is the one that fits in every position you expect to use.
Folding and extendable do not mean the same thing
A folding table may use hinged leaves or sections that move out of the way. An extendable table may separate, slide or accept an additional leaf. Some designs bridge both ideas. Check the individual product description, photographs and dimensions rather than relying on the collection name to identify the mechanism.
Measure closed, open and in-between positions
Mark the smallest everyday footprint and the largest dining footprint on the floor. Add the chairs, then allow room to pull them out and walk behind occupied seats. Include door swings, radiators, sideboards and kitchen units. If the table has more than two useful configurations, record each one.
Also check whether the room has enough space to operate the mechanism. A table may fit once extended but still need extra temporary clearance while leaves swing, slide or unfold. Compare fixed options in the main dining tables collection if the mechanism would regularly obstruct the room.
Where are extension leaves stored?
Some leaves store inside the table, while others need a separate dry, safe location. Confirm this from the product information. External leaves need protection from knocks, moisture and uneven storage; internal leaves can add weight to the table. Never assume a leaf is self-storing unless stated.
Match the chairs to every table size
Test chair positions in both the compact and expanded layouts. Compare chair width, seat height, arm height and the table’s underside clearance. Browse dining chairs by measurement, not colour alone. A central base may allow different spacing from corner legs, but the precise base footprint still matters.
Round or rectangular when extended?
Some compact tables change shape as they open. If you prefer conversational seating and softer circulation lines, compare round dining tables. Record the final shape and dimensions before planning seat numbers, because chair capacity depends on the usable edge, chair width and leg position.
Are extendable tables good for small spaces?
They can be excellent space-saving dining tables when the closed form suits everyday use and the open form fits occasional gatherings. They are less useful if extension leaves have nowhere to go or the chairs block circulation when the table is open. A coordinated dining table and chair set may help when chair proportions are the main concern.
What material should I choose?
Consider weight, care, finish and how frequently the mechanism will be used. Follow the care guidance for the stated material and lift movable parts as instructed. For surface comparisons, read the guide to sintered stone and marble dining tables.
Can I see the mechanism before ordering?
Rit Concept has a London showroom at N17 9QU. Contact the team before travelling to confirm whether the specific folding or extending table is available to demonstrate, and ask for clarification if any open, closed or package dimension is missing.
